After Sunday meatballs, I was definitely in need of a cardio blast Monday morning. I usually opt for a spin class but instead I tried Beyond500, the new fitness phenom on Henderson, owned and operated by Brandi Marino. Marino also has Beyond Pilates, where I like to squeeze in a pilates class on Lovers Lane. She has fitness down to a science so I knew I was in for a good workout, whatever it may be.
Upon arriving to Elissa Fairchild’s 9:30 class, I quickly learned that this was going to entail a lot of running. I’m not a runner so I would normally stray from a treadmill workout, but after getting on the curve shaped treadmill, I realized it was low impact and also non-electric. When I walked towards the front of the curve I naturally sped up and when I walked towards the back I slowed. Amazing and no problem on my knees. I learned that this self-propelled treadmill is also thirty percent more effective in burning calories, hence the class name Beyond500.
Elissa started off by explaining what we were going to do over the next 45 minutes. We were going to complete a workout of three cycles, each of which has three disciplines.. the first discipline is a four minute jog with intervals of sprints. The second, three pilates exercises on the pilates chair to activate, isolate, and tone.. and the last, three strength exercises using a kettle bell (swings, lunges, abs).
After her demonstration, Elissa warmed us up with a brief aerobic workout and then sent us to the curves. The jog wasn’t hard but the sprints really got me, and with every round they doubled in length of time. By the third round we were doing sprints that lasted 30 seconds, but the music along with Elissa’s enthusiasm propelled me forward. I loved the exercises that followed because they gave me time to slow my heart rate before the next cycle and really worked all of my muscle groups. They were slow and controlled to ensure proper form and better results.
A perfect combination of high intensity cardio plus pilates and strength training made this a well rounded workout. I was sore in the afternoon and even more so this morning. Thank you Beyond 500 and Elissa Fairchild for pushing me to my limit!
See you back on the curve.
