Last week I interviewed Marla Malcolm Beck, CEO and co-founder of beauty retailer Bluemercury, which has just opened here in Highland Park Village. This is the 65th location for the much anticipated, one-stop makeup, skincare, and spa haven. Bluemercury combines 90+ brands of personal care products (such as Laura Mercier, Nars, Ren, and ReVive) with personalized, expert advice for the ultimate beauty experience.
After popping in to browse the bustling new beauty boutique, I sat down next door at Bistro 31 with the down to earth, Harvard business school grad to ask her a few quick questions about her first venture in Texas. I soon learned that she had opened her first store in the Georgetown section of Washington D.C. in 1999, (one year after graduating) and has since opened 64 others. Impressive. I was curious about the name and she told me it was a combination of her favorite color blue and of Mercury, the God of communication. Very suiting seeing how Marla has such a cool, calm disposition and is so easy to talk to. She spoke of how friendly everyone is in Dallas and chatted with me about my pregnancy and of her own experiences in having children. Amidst a busy store opening and a million distractions, I really appreciated how Marla was able to have a real conversation and be so present. This led me to ask about her stance on all natural skincare and makeup, seeing that I’m very much interested in gentle non-toxic products for pregnancy that still yield results. Her thoughts were very much in line with my beliefs and she has even created her own skincare line called M-61 in effort to achieve safe, all-natural products that are still highly technical and effective. She has eliminated the use of parabans, sulfates, artificial fragrances and dyes, and utilizes vitamin-C and glycolic acid among other ingredients such as essential oils and natural clays. Her in store spa, which I can’t wait to try, has performed over 1 million highly technical treatments. I also asked her about her thoughts on all natural makeup lines such as RMS and was thrilled to learn that she will soon be carrying that line in her store. Between M-61 skincare and RMS makeup alone, I’m sure I’ll be making many trips to the village to stock up.
She sent me on my way with a bag full of goods to try and I’ve since fallen in love her M-61 SuperSoothe E Microdermabrasion Scrub. It’s a 1 minute facial scrub and mask with white Kaolin clay, vitamin E antioxidants, and powerful naturals such as aloe, goldenberry, and seaweed. It’s pregnancy safe and can be used up to three times per week for exfoliation and to soothe the skin with natural anti-inflammatories. I’m addicted to her SuperSoothe E Lip Balm which hydrates with all-natural shea butter, vitamin E, seaweed, aloe, and golden berry.
Special thanks to Marla Malcolm Beck for taking the time to sit down with me! I have no doubt that Bluemercury will be a huge success and a long standing staple in Dallas.
