Newborn photos by Julia Lauren Photography (7 days old)
Can’t believe it’s already been a month since giving birth to our precious daughter! Sarah “London” Howard was born on July 10th (five days past her due date) at 4:25 pm and weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces. She was 19 and a half inches long and has since grown 3 inches! At her one month check up, her pediatrician said she’s in the 98th percentile for height and 48th percentile for weight. She is growing so fast, and as happy as I am that breastfeeding is going so well, I wish she would just stay tiny forever.
As I type one-handed with her fast asleep on me, I realize that motherhood, despite it’s challenges, is really a dream come true. I can’t believe how much my perspective on life has changed in such a short period. She is my angel, but she wasn’t easy to get here…
At my sonogram four days past my due date, my fluids were dangerously low so I had to be induced immediately. It took 22 long hours for me to fully dilate and then 2 and a half hours to push her out. During labor, her heart rate dropped many times and when she was finally born the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck.
The birth was not how I had envisioned it. Without going into the specifics of my three page birth plan, I had planned on having an all natural, active birth. I had prepared with the help of a doula and by reading many books such as Gentle Birth Method and Hypnobirthing: The Mongan Method. I was going to labor in the comfort of our home until the contractions were 3 minutes apart and then head to the hospital to deliver. I had hoped and prayed for a fast delivery, and even done many treatments such as acupuncture.
The moral of my birth story is that there’s only so much we can control in our lives. I cried when my doctor told me that we couldn’t wait any longer for her to come on her own time. However, now that I look back on what all seems like a dream, I realize that it was a perfect birth because the end result was that I got my perfect angel. She is a healthy, happy baby and for that I am so grateful.
